The act of remodeling, renovation and reconfiguration approached the issue of lifecycles with regard to housing stock. Rather than partaking in the uniquely American pastime of moving with every new child, every pay raise or every new challenge, the goal must be the ability to alter and increase our space as our needs change. Beyond Hinged Space, which allows for minimal change that must be built into the plan, or Bielski's code, which uses a unique housing style to inform its processes, Grow Home leaves the plan unfinished and operates in a more common suburban housing structure. The Kit of Parts operation involves the resident directly in the configuration of their home, but exists as firmware, somewhere between software (program) and hardware(object). The idea of the house as a machine is not new; the idea of the house as a machine that you can fix and alter on your own is groundbreaking.
