Providing true ownership, even in custom built or architect designed residences, is a matter of personal stake in the quality of one's own space. Similarly, community ownership relies heavily on residents having a stake in the public spaces and connecting ligaments of their neighborhood. Hellersdorf-Berlin investigates ownership on this emotional level with a multistage evolution of a typical block housing project. As time passes, residents add, sutract, trade and overlap their spaces, informing each design choice themselves. Balconies are shared, gardens are cosntructed, rooflines are altered. In time, the aggregation represents a dissolution of the rigid housing structure and breathes life into the community that created this new and curious creature.
