Los Angeles has a rich history of unique housing arrangements, predicated heavily on the courtyard model. The creation of social interstitial spaces is helped along by climate factors, but ultimately rests on the sociability of the residents to function successfully. The downside of extensive urban residential development is the adoption of static forms for economic and legal reasons. Bielski remedies this disparity- individual space with no hope of individualization, social space with no hope of socialization- with a dual effort of code structure and architectural scheme. The ability to individualize and socialize by the permutation of the unit and the consolidation or partitioning of the interstitial spaces enriches the space and the relations between those inhabitants of the space.
