The Old English at the University of Virginia
homepage was redesigned in June 2003 to take advantage
of the features of modern browsers. It is written in validated XHTML
1.1, permitting browsers to render pages quickly. For layout and all
styling it employs Cascading
Style Sheets, making for small files and quick downloads. For
dynamic effects it uses a modest amount of JavaScript. It avoids
proprietary features such as plug-ins, and thus is unlikely to become
obsolete. It has been designed with Accessibility in view, and I will be
working to make it conform to accessibility standards.
Web-page authors who are wondering about the advantages of web standards should visit the Web Standards Project for an explanation of the benefits and help getting started.
