I am happy to be contacted by students who are considering
applying to join our department. I work with students who
share regional or topical research interests with me,
including those who focus on kinship, divorce, legal
anthropology, citizenship / nation, intimacy, or Japanese
studies. You can learn more about the research interests in our
department, and get a sense of what I teach and how I teach. Our
department has put together a wonderful overview of the doctoral
student trajectory and requirements that gives a
good sense of what incoming students could expect.
I am currently chairing the dissertation committees of
Mary Pancoast and Macario Garcia, and am a member of
Dannah Dennis’ committee. In
2012, I was the outsider reader for Jessica Starling’s
dissertation in Religious Studies on “temple
wives” in contemporary Japan, and a member of
Catherine Madeo’s MA committee in Anthropology.
