Self- and peer-review processes are both integral aspects of scientific publication. Self-review involves
objectively assessing the quality of your own work while peer review involves receiving feedback from knowledgeable scientists in your or a closely
related field. Careful and thoughtful science relies on both review processes for "good science" and for accurate published work.
Four Feedback Responses will be conducted throughout the semester, one with each submitted Research Report. The purpose of the response is to give you an opportunity to reflect on your own written work and the instructor's and peer-critiquer's comments in order to improve your scientific writing. Specifically, the response should be a brief (typed) paragraph based on the following guidelines:
Feedback Response 1 (Sunscreens)
Write a short response to the following statement: "If I had no limitations on my time, I would do _____ and _____ to make my Research Report better." Be specific on how and why addressing these two areas would improve your report.Feedback Response 2 (Molecular Orbitals I)
Write a short response to the following statement: "Based on the instructor's feedback and my impression of my last Research Report, I did _____ and _____ to improve my Molecular Orbitals I Research Report." Be specific on how and why addressing these two areas improves your report. Also, if you choose not to directly address a particular point raised by the instructor, you should justify your reasoning.Feedback Response 3 (IR Spectroscopy)
Write a short response to the following statement: "Based on the instructor's feedback, my peer critique, and my impression of my last Research Report, I did _____ and _____ to improve my IR Spectroscopy Research Report." Be specific on how and why addressing these two areas improves your report. Also, if you choose not to directly address a particular point raised by the instructor, you should justify your reasoning.Feedback Response 4 (Forensics)
Write a short response to the following statement: "Based on the instructor's feedback, my peer critique, and my impression of my last Research Report, I did _____ and _____ to improve my Forensics Research Report." Be specific on how and why addressing these two areas improves your report. Also, if you choose not to directly address a particular point raised by the instructor, you should justify your reasoning.
Each feedback response will be worth 5 points, with the sum of them accounting for 20 points or 4% of your final course grade. Each response should be included with the corresponding Research Report.
