Reading Questions for E.B. White's Charlotte's Web

Below are two questions to consider as you read E. B. White's Charlotte's Web. In your response paper, please focus on one question only. You are also free to focus your response on a different aspect of the story. In both cases please make sure to go beyond describing your emotional reaction and to refer to specific examples from the text (see response paper assignment.)

  1. How would you describe the spiritual journey portrayed in Charlotte's Web? What does Fern learn about the meaning of life and death? How does this meaning differ or concur with your own understandings and beliefs?

  2. Charlotte's Web is filled with wordplays and references to writing and one could argue that it is a highly self-conscious text. What does it tell us about the power of words and narrative?
