Welcome to the Early American Seminar at the University of Virginia.

We are a group of historians and other scholars studying the history of colonial North America, the Atlantic World, and the United States through the Civil War and Reconstruction. We welcome collaboration and interaction with scholars from other disciplines studying the same period, as well as from historians of the early modern period beyond America and the Atlantic. Our seminar brings together U.Va. graduate students and faculty, Monticello researchers, and visiting scholars to workshop papers, articles, or chapters with their peers.

The EAS, based in Charlottesville, Virginia, is a collaboration between the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia and The Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello.
