Hot Button Issues for Technical Managers

 

Technical professionals possess a unique blend of skills, abilities and talents.  As a technology expert, you can master most aspects of technology without a hesitation, are proficient in any software package placed in front of you and welcome the opportunity to assemble and reassemble computer systems Òjust for fun.Ó  And then it happensÉyou are so competent in your job, you are promoted to manager!  In other words, in addition to your existing responsibilities, you are now managing a staff of employees with similar skills and abilities.   How do you successfully make the leap from technology expert to insightful, caring, and supportive manager?

 

This one-day workshop is designed for technical managers and supervisors that desire to improve their grasp of current supervisory issues in todayÕs technical marketplace.  Through a combination of discussion, in-class exercises, and current case studies, you will:

 

á             Realize the difference between Team Building versus Team Work

á             Discuss the difference between Group Think versus Balancing Inquiry and Advocacy (the Fifty Discipline)

 

 

Instructor:  John Alexander is a manager of instructional technology with the University of Virginia Information, Technology and Communications Department.  Mr. Alexander has been teaching management communications since 1995 and has published numerous articles and presentations on the topic of technology and classroom technical support.  Previously, Mr. Alexander served as dean of admissions and a research development officer.  Mr. Alexander received his B.S. and M.A. from the University of Tennessee.
