Discussion Section Policies

20% of your final grade will result from your performance in discussion. Discussion grades will be determined by class participation and attendance. 20% of your grade in the course is based on written work. This applies to written work completed in section.

Class Participation: Grades will be calculated each week based upon each student's performance. Consistent, thoughtful, and active participation based upon the readings will be necessary.

Attendance: Attendance will be taken at each discussion section. Absences can either be excused or unexcused. In order to have an excused absence, the TA must be made aware of the absence in advance (either told in person, via e-mail or by telephone at least the day before section) unless an emergency prevents the student from notifying her. Be aware that the TA reserves the right to determine what exactly constitutes an emergency (for example, schedule conflicts are usually NOT considered emergencies, so the student must tell the TA about upcoming conflicts ahead of time). A student who has an unexcused absence will receive a participation grade of zero for the day of the absence. Refer to the University's policies on what constitutes an excused or unexcused absence. Bear in mind, that because this class meets weekly, and because it applies information learned in lecture, attendance is mandatory.

Section Goals

1. To aid in comprehension of the course goals.

2. To discuss, dissect, and examine information presented in lecture.

Section Expectations

1. Arrive on time. Consistent tardiness will affect your participation grade.

2. Contribute to large and small group discussions, and listen and respond to others' contributions.

3. Keep up with the readings for the course, formulate questions, and jot down comments as you read.

4. Bring current reading, paper, and pen to class. It is almost certain that they will be used each section meeting. Do not bring cell phones, and do not bring food.
