Which part of the gesture influences the perceived duration of the note-- the portion before impact, the portion after impact, or maybe some kind of mix of the two? This experiment addresses that question.
We created videos that showed only the first half of the strike and then froze on impact and videos that only showed the rebound after the impact. We also included videos that showed the full gesture. We found that showing the full video or the portion of the video that occurs after impact affected perceived note duration, but showing the portion of the video before impact did not have a significant effect (see figure). This suggests that the portion of the strike that comes after the impact determines the video's effect on a note's perceived duration.
