Who are we.
We are a team of three independent research laboratories at the University of Virginia; The Blackman Lab, Leitinger Lab, and Wamhoff Lab. Each lab has an expertise in a specialized vascular cell that comprises the blood vessel wall during atherosclerosis; endothelial cell, smooth muscle cell, and macrophage. In order to better understand the complexities of this devastating disease, our laboratories came together in 2006 to form the Laboratory of Atherogenesis (LoA). Atherogeneis is the very early, or beginning stages of atherosclerosis.

Our Mission.
To discover new cures for heart disease through innovative technologies.

To elucidate the interactive communication between vascular endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and macrophage during the early stages of atherosclerosis.

To train excellent scientists and clinical researchers in vascular cell and molecular biology and medicine. Laboratory of Atherogenesis at the University of Virginia Home Research Initiatives LoA News
