Steven McIntosh was born and raised in Dundee, Scotland. He graduated with first class honours bachelors in chemical engineering at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon completion, Mr. McIntosh started graduate work with Prof. Raymond J. Gorte at the The University of Pennsylvania. The title of his Ph.D. thesis was 'Development of Direct Hydrocarbon Solid Oxide Fuel Cells'.

Mr. McIntosh was awarded a Marie Curie Intra-European fellowship to carry out postdoctoral work at The University of Twente, The Netherlands, with Dr. Henny J.M. Bouwmeester. The focus of this work was the stability of mixed ionic electronic conducting materials for oxygen transport membranes.

Mr. McIntosh joined the Chemical Engineering Department at The University of Virginia in January 2006.
