Steven McIntosh was born and raised in Dundee, Scotland, before moving to study for his bachelors in chemical engineering at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon completion, Mr. McIntosh started gradute work with Prof. Raymond J. Gorte at the The University of Pennsylvania. The title of the resulting Ph.D. thesis was 'Development of Direct Hydrocarbon Solid Oxide Fuel Cells'.

Mr. McIntosh then spent 16 months as a Marie Curie Intra-European fellow at the University of Twente, The Netherlands, working with Dr. Henny J.M. Bouwmeester.

Mr. McIntosh joined the Chemical Engineering Department at The University of Virginia in January 2006.
