Healthy People/Healthy Places
The The aim of this sophomore inquiry is to provide an understanding of this ecological concept of health as a dynamic process of adaptation to a constantly changing environment. Students will examine the relationship between how we live our lives and the economic, social and physical environments that surround us. A term-long community-based project provides an opportunity for hands-on experience with the subject matter. Students will develop skills to study characteristics of the built environment that may influence health and apply lessons from urban planning and public health research to current and future problems.
*This course is the "gateway" to an undergrad cluster on Healthy People Healthy Places here at PSU - part of the University Studies program.
Joint Degree in Planning and Public Health
M.P.H/M.U.P Joint Degree
This joint degree in Public Health and Urban and Regional Planning is a 3 year program that will allow students to examine the relationships between physical and mental health, urban form, healthy lifestyles, human services, transportation, physical activity, public planning and investment decisions. In addition to the core courses, internship requirements, and culminating experiences required for each degree, students will participate in an integrative seminar that synthesizes the two disciplines.
Graduates of the program will be prepared for employment in either of the two fields, and positioned to lead innovative efforts in establishing and maintaining healthy communities.
