Counselor Education Program

University of Virginia
Curry School of Education
DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES

The Counselor Education Program Area at the University of Virginia has two entry-level programs, Clinical Mental Health (MEd/EdS) and School Counseling (MEd). and a doctoral program (PhD) in Counselor Education and Supervision. The University of Virginia Counselor Education graduate programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

The entry-level programs typically require two years and doctoral students, who are CACREP program graduates, usually complete their programs in three years. Supervised experiences are a critical element in all programs. Preparation for entry level counseling positions is the goal of the School and Mental Health Counseling programs, and the focus of the doctoral program is preparation of graduates for counselor education faculty positions. Financial assistance for entry-level students is limited by the available funds and the demanding schedule of the required program field experiences. Doctoral students receive financial assistance that provides tuition, a health insurance subsidy and a stipend for work as a graduate teaching assistant or supervisor.

All students work closely with our eight person faculty who invite you to learn more about our school and especially the Counselor Education program from the following pages.
