EDHS 733-1: ETHICAL AND LEGAL ASPECTS OF COUNSELING
FALL 2006

Requirements and Grading

The course will be letter graded. Grades will be assigned based on points earned on the following requirements:

Mastery Exam 30 Possible Points

The mastery exam will count for a maximum of 30 points and will consist of short answer (identification type questions) and a case study. The short answer questions will be sampled from a list of mastery learning objectives posted by the first class meeting. The examination can be repeated until the minimum required grade of 85% correct is achieved. Because the scheduled day and time of the examination falls two days after the final class and at a different time, I propose a take home examination distributed at the December 5 class meeting to be returned by December 12. The details will be announced after you approve this or some other plan.

Study of Ethics Codes 10 Possible Points

Study the ACA, and the AMCHA or the ASCA Ethics codes. Study means read thoroughly and then read again as necessary. Write a brief comment about what you found most interesting and your area of greatest disagreement or confusion. DUE BY DECEMBER 5.

Case Study 20 Possible Points

Submit your written analysis of a case you select from assigned chapters in the Remley and Herlihy (2007) text that is on reserve. Use any of the many schemes for analysis of an ethical issue (e.g., the one in the ACA Ethical Standards Casebook (6th ed.) but include at least the following.

  • What are the ethical and/or legal issues involved in this case? Discuss the conflicting factors (what makes this a dilemma) and note the competing “goods” or “bads”).
  • What standards in the ACA Code of Ethics are pertinent to the case, and what guidance does the code offer? Are there legal issues in addition to ethical issues?
  • What recommendation(s) do you make for dealing with the dilemma? What is your rationale for this recommendation?

Submit a written analysis of the case (2-4) pages, double spaced. Due by December 5.

Reading 30 Total Possible Points

For each reading in addition to the suggested text chapters read an article and write a short statement about why you selected the article and whether it was useful. Include a citation in APA style. Five points each. Due by December 5.

Activity Points 20 Total Possible Points

Extra readings 5 points each 10 points maximum
Participate in on-line chat about an ethical issue or problem 10 points
Participate in a team development and posting of an ethical    problem and proposed resolution 15 points
Respond to a posted case (if any are posted) 5 points
A self-designed learning experience 10 points

You may earn up to 20 grade points for completing selected activities from the above options. COMPLETION OF THE POSTING OR A REPORT OF THE ACTIVITY IS DUE BY DECEMBER 5.
