The concept for Thinking of Reading: The University of Virginia Readerís Guide is straightforward: we are assembling a book of reading lists created by academic experts, lists that are meant to appeal to educated readers outside the academy who want a more thoughtful, stimulating and coherent reading experience than they might find on their own. We are working with the University of Virginia Press to publish this volume, with a preface by Ed Ayers, in 2007.

The goal of each contribution is to present challenging, but not overly technical, readings in such a way as to catch a readerís interest with real substance and without intimidating language. Along the way, contributors might want to reflect on the act of reading itself and what it means for a particular field. In addition providing a list of what to read, our audience will learn how to read a given list, what to read for, and what the rewards will be.
