Greg and Jon lead a lecture
once a week for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Each lecture introduces
students to a new principle from the Little Red Schoolhouse, which
students can then put into practice as writers and editors.
To drive home this principle of learning through experience, all
the lectures are organized inductively. They may begin with a review
of the previous session, but the current session almost always begins
with paired examples for them to distinguish and then explain. In
this way, students are forced to wrestle with concepts and explanations
before they get the explanations for their intuitions. As the lecture
continues, students develop a definition of the principle and begin
to practice picking the principle out of models.
Instructors are required to attend lectures, so that they can become
more comfortable with the material and distribute course packets
to their students.
