Characters and Actions
Identify/Generate the principle
Time: 10 minutes
Ask students to identify the fairy tale you're describing based
on these words (read them aloud): carried, walked, knocked, ate,
said, lived, skipped
Presumably, they will be flummoxed.
Ask them to identify the fairy tale based on this new set of words:
Little Red Riding Hood, grandmother, wolf, woodsman
The lesson here, then, is that most people find it easier to recognize
characters than actions. Clearly-defined, familiar characters will
make your argument much easier to read.
Variation: Use actions and characters from an editorial in the
Cav Daily. Ask students to identify the topic/argument of the editorial.
