In India you will find 16% of the world's population living on 2% of the world's land- much of it degraded.

Of every 6 people in the world, 1 is from India.  Of every 3 POOR people in the world, 1 is from India.2  India is one of the poorest nations of the world, with about 40% of its population living below the poverty line.   "The per capita income is less than $400, or about $30 a month, or less that a dollar a day.  Even that figure is skewed with the a tiny minority earning millions and others much less than $30 a month."

Dualism is another national concern for India as it fights with Pakistan over Kashmir.  So too are land scarcity and population growth.  About half of India's population is illiterate, rising to 70% for women in some states.  This is one of the lowest rates in the world, giving India the "dubious distinction of having the largest number of illiterate people - some 450 million - of any country in the world."

Pollution is also a serious problem in India, with about 65% of the country's energy needs being met by coal.3
