MAPS DISPLAYING ETHNIC COMPOSITION AROUND THE GLOBE

Maps are invaluable to understanding the problem that ethnic nationalism presents to the international community.  Below are a number of good maps dealing with various regions of the world.  Most of them come from the Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection of the Univeristy of Texas at Austin.  This is far and away the best on-line resource for maps of any sort.  There are far more than just ethnic composition maps, so I urge you to check it out in its own right.

Ethnic Composition of Southern Russia and Middle Asia:  This map again shows the many intermixing of the various ethnic groups.  Of particular value, it shows how ethnic nations cut across state lines.

Ethnic Groups of Moldova:  This map enables one to understand the ethnic conflic that this tiny republic has suffered through following its declaration of independence.  This, along with the Caucasus map, show, as well as any can, the problem with ethnic nationalism in a world where nationalities are numerous and interspersed.

Ethnic Composition of Central Asia

Chinese Linguistic Map:  This map shows the different linguistic regions of China.  It helps show China's diversity.  Even though, the Han Chinese constitute approximately 90% of the population, these linguistic differences can be enough to possibly cause ethnic tension (similar to Belgium).  This also show the minority inhabited fringes of Tibet and the Ughuir inhabited areas.

India's Religion:  As religion is the major source of ethnic tension, this map is very valuable.  Beyond just the map, each region has a bar graph showing the percentage of each religion in that area.

Sri Lanka Maps:  This one screen displays three very nice maps which aids in understanding the ethnic conflict that has plagued this island.  One show ethnic composition, another population density, and the final one land use.

Nepal Ethnic Composition:  Even in this relative isolated area, there are several ethnic groups mixed amongst each other.

Pakistan Ethnic Groups:  This shows the composition of the other major state to share the sub-continent.

Ethnic Groups of Iran:  This is an excellent map that shows the major ethnic groups of Iran 's Ethnic Republics:  Like the map for the former Soviet Union, this shows both where the actual Russian ethnic republics are and their approximate ethnic make-up.

Russia's Autonomous Regions:  Though this map does not show actual ethnic composition, it again displays the wide diversity of Russia.

Caucasus Region-Ethnolinguistic Groups:  This map, in excellent detail shows the rampant intermingling of ethnic groups in this relively small geographical area. With regard to ethnic conflicts, they allow one to see both Nagarno-Karabakh and Georiga.

Caucasus Boundaries:  This complements the map above.  Though not showing the ethnic composition of the areas, it has the areas of Abkhazia, Nagarno-Karabakh, and South Ossetia marked off.  This provides a cleaner view of the areas shown in the ethnic map.

Ethnic Groups of Iran:  This is an excellent map that shows the major ethnic groups of Iran and the extent to which those group cross boarders into other states.

Kurdish Areas:  This map shows the Kurdish homeland as is split between Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and the former Soviet Union.

Lebenon Religious Groups:  This map helps explain the vicious, ethnic based civil war that devestated this state during the 1980s.

Muslim Distribution in Europe, Asia, and Africa:  This map nicely shows the extent of Muslim distribution on these three continents including the Shi'ite-Sunni distinction.  This is useful because of the degree to which this information has played in many varied ethnic conflicts (eg. Bosnia and Kosovo, Sudan, India-Pakistan, Iraq-Iran, Lebenon, etc.)
