In addition to Dunnigan's
Handbook, there are a couple other design sites worth
noting:
Gamasutra
http://www.gamasutra.com/
A great computer games industry site. Lots of serious game
industry questions, from recruitment and marketing issues to
tech-heavy topics like scalability problems in 3D modeling.
Their design
features section is really well-done and has more
interesting articles on computer game design issues than I have
seen anywhere else.
The
Art of Computer Game Design, by Chris Crawford
http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/fac/peabody/game-book/Coverpage.html
Written in 1983, this book still manages to be
relevant, by concentrating on the theory of games rather than
specific technology. Crawford is an interesting figure in
computer wargames, being one of the first to attempt such games,
and one of the most eloquent theorists of the medium. More
of his work is collected here.
