Current SON/SAVANA Projects

Lindsay Donovan and Sarah Farrell Primary Healthcare Nurse Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Mental Illness
  • Depression is estimated to be the fourth leading cause of morbidity and mortality
  • Recent political change – SA is one of the few countries with increasing poverty
  • Overwhelming impact of HIV/AIDS
  • Only 278 psychiatrists in the entire country, only 90 work in the public sector – mental health care non-existent in rural areas due to lack of training and resources for primary care nurse providers.

Sarah Anderson and Barbara Parker
The Experience of Sexual Assault in Limpopo Province
  • 20% of women in SA report rape, and Limpopo is epidemic for sexual assault and child abuse
  • Tohohyandou Victim Empowerment Program serves these individuals in the immediate area, but there are no trained sexual assault nurse examiners in Limpopo, and there are few services available outside of this facility
  • Goal is to build on what we are finding out about the experiences and perception of community workers in criminal justice, health care, and crisis support teams, then to increase in-region capacity through SANE training

7
Future Possibilities
