That Devil Music:
A Cultural History of Blues Music
in the U.S. (ISHU 4011)

National Single-Cone Steel Resonator Guitar

The famous musician Van Morrison once commented that “Hearing the Blues changed my Life.” As a scholar and musician, it has changed my life too. It is a powerful art form, and its development in the US is a fascinating story of, among other things, race, economy, and culture. In this course, we will explore how this original American art form developed. What are its origins? Why do many scholars claim that Blues formed the basis for Rock n' Roll, Classic Rock, and even some of today's music? These are just some of the questions we will pursue as we analyze this sophisticated art form known simply as the Blues. You will also have the opportunity to formulate your own questions, or investigate topics within the scope of the course that are of particular interest to you. It is my hope that in this process you will develop a deep appreciation for Blues music that goes well beyond this course. Please click on "Syllabus" for more information about this course.
