Art Under Fire:

A History of Art Controversies in the United States (ISHU/ISSS 4311)

Marcel Duchamp

Nude Descending a Staricase, No. 2 (1912)

Art has generated controversies in the United States ever since the founding of the nation. Why did these controversies occur? How do they inform us about changing perceptions of what is and what is not acceptable art? What do they tell us about the evolution of ideas and values in American society? These are some of the key questions that we will explore as we study the most significant controversies in the history of the United States and place them in their appropriate cultural and historical contexts.

Aside from deepening students' cultural literacy and helping them develop an informed relationship with the past, this course is designed to improve certain skills. These include the ability to think critically and creatively, and to express ideas more effectively both verbally and in writing. To achieve these goals, students will be required to write interpretive essays, participate regularly in class and Collab discussions based on readings, and give formal presentations.
