Art and Society in 1930s America (ISHU 3450)

Alexandre Hogue, The Crucified Land (1939)

The depression of the 1930s was the most extreme economic crisis the United States had, and still has, ever experienced. Some of the most powerful, interesting and influential music, painting, film, and literature ever created in the United States was produced during the Great Depression. In this course, we will examine artistic developments in the context of the Great Depression and, in doing so, gain a deeper understanding of American culture and art not only in the 1930s, but also before and after.
