The World of Theodore Roosevelt

(ISHU/ISSS 4314)

John Singer Sargent, Theodore Roosevelt (1903)

In 1913, the French poet Charles Péguy commented that "The world has changed more in the last thirty years than it has since Jesus Christ." Many historians would agree with this assertion. The political, social, economic, and cultural developments during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were remarkable, particularly in the United States.

Theodore Roosevelt, recognized by many scholars as one of the most important, and perhaps the most dynamic, presidents the United States has ever seen, spanned this time period. He lived through the Civil War and World War I, witnessing and, in some cases, helping to shape some of the most significant changes in American society.

In this course, we will examine the life of Theodore Roosevelt and the evolution of American society. In addition, we will attempt to relate Roosevelt's life to some of the most important developments in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
