I am interested in mitochondrial maintenance and the mechanisms governing mitochondrial health as mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in metabolic diseases. Mitochondrial maintenance is a balance of producing more mitochondria (biogenesis), removing dysfunctional mitochondria (mitophagy) and remodeling the mitochondrial reticulum to optimize mitochondrial health and function. I am particularly interested in mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy and the signaling pathways that stimulate and suppress these cellular processes. My research focuses on a mitochondrial specific AMPK complex (mitoAMPK) and elucidating the relationship between mitoAMPK and mitochondrial maintenance within the context of skeletal muscle..
