I received my Ph. D. degree from Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007. My doctoral studies focused on the functional analysis of Muscle Regulatory Factors, myogenin and MRF4, in flounder. During my first postdoctoral training in Dr. Bob Schulz’s lab at University of Notre Dame from 2007 to 2011, I used Drosophila as a model system to study heart development. In 2012, I made a strategic move to take a second post-doctoral position with Dr. Yan. In the Yan Lab, I expand my research to study mitochondrial regulation in the heart and skeletal muscles with focuses on disease processes.

My long-term goal is to identify and study genes with protective function against mitochondrial stress, which can serve as therapeutic targets for detrimental diseases, such as chronic heart failure (CHF). CHF is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in industrialized countries. A growing body of evidence suggests that mitochondrial stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of CHF. I will use multiple model systems (yeast, Drosophila and mouse) to screen and identify genes or drugs which can prevent CHF under the stressed conditions.
